NOUN CLAUSES

A noun clause adalah sekelompok kata yang berisi subjek dan kata kerja namun tidak dapat berdiri sendiri sebagai kalimat .

misalnya :   What you think does not matter.

A noun clause dapat digunakan sebagai subjek atau objek dalam bentuk sebagai berikut.

misalnya :  What you think does not matter (kata noun sebagai subjek kalimat)

misalnya : I don’t know what she thinks (kata noun sebagai objek kalimat)

A       Noun clauses can begin with …

1.     … a question word (pertanyaan) :

        where he lives

        what one says

        who the man is

        how she survives

2.     … “whether” or “if”

        whether she will stay

        if she will stay

3.     … a question word + TO infinitive

        what to say

        where to meet

4.     … “that”

        that he is innocent

        that she knows three languages

misalnya : That she worked hard for the whole term pleased her parents.

Selain kata “that” kita juga bisa menggunakan "the belief that, the fact that, the idea that, the evidence that. "

misalnya : 

•  The fact that the economic growth rate is lower than the population growth rate causes problems.

• The idea that the teacher should dominate in the classroom is unacceptable. 

Namun, jika subjeknya terlalu panjang,mungkin pembaca akan kesulitan untuk memahami kalimat tsb. Untuk mengatasinya, kita akan menggunakan kata "it" sebagai subjek noun clause yg diikuti .

misalnya :

• That she worked hard for the whole term pleased her parents. kita dapat merubahnya menjadi "It pleased her parents that she worked hard for the whole term."

Pola diatas hanya bisa digunakan dengan kata “that” tetapi tidak dengan kata “the idea that / the fact that”. 

B       Using subjunctive in noun clauses

       

Sebuah kata kerja subjunctive adalah bentuk sederhana dari kata kerja. Kalimat dengan kata kerja subjunctive biasanya ditekankan pada hal yg penting atau darurat.

misalnya : I suggest (that) he see a doctor.

* Negative form (bentuk negatif) : not + simple form of the verb

   misal : I recommend that she not go to that movie.

* Passive form (bentuk positif) : simple form of BE + past participle

   misal : It is essential that children be told the truth.

Ketika kalimat kata kerja utama dalam bentuk past maka kata noun (benda) juga dalam bentuk past.

misal :  I suggested that he saw a doctor.

Common verbs and expressions followed by the subjunctive in a noun clause:

advise, ask, demand, insist, propose, recommend, request, suggest

+  that + noun clause

essential, imperative, important, critical, necessary, vital

It is  +  that + noun clause
